Rules for Hot Springs and Public Baths

This article introduces the basic rules for using hot springs and public baths in Japan. Please wash your body before entering the bathtub and keep your towel out of the water. Note that some facilities may not allow entry if you have tattoos, so it is best to check ahead of time.
When using a hot spring (onsen) or public bath (sento), it is common courtesy to wash your body thoroughly before entering the bathtub. Please also make sure not to put your towel into the bath water, and be mindful not to cause discomfort to other customers. Regarding tattoos, some facilities may restrict entry for guests with tattoos, so we recommend checking with the facility in advance.
