What You Need to Know About Your Residence Card

The Residence Card is an extremely important document for foreign nationals living in Japan. This article explains how to obtain one and what to do if it is lost or needs to be returned.

Issuance of the Residence Card The Residence Card is an identification document issued to foreign nationals who stay in Japan for a mid- to long-term period. Once your entry procedures are complete, you will receive it at the airport or another designated location.

Registering Your Address (Move-In Notification) Once you have decided where you will live in Japan, you must submit a move-in notification (転入届) at your local municipal office within 14 days and complete your resident registration.

Lost Residence Card If you lose your Residence Card, you must promptly apply for a reissue. First, file a lost property report at a police station, and then complete the reissuance procedure at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau.

Returning Your Residence Card When you leave Japan and your residence status is no longer valid, you are required to return your Residence Card. This can be done at the airport when you depart.
