The Obstetric Medical Compensation System helps families by providing compensation if a baby suffers severe cerebral palsy during childbirth. This system applies to babies born in Japan, including those born to foreign residents. Since January 2022, the system’s criteria and fees have been updated. There is a deadline to apply for compensation, so early action is important.
- What has changed?
From January 2022, the system updated the compensation criteria and the fee collected from birthing facilities. Babies born at 28 weeks or later are eligible under the new criteria, and special reviews based on low oxygen conditions were removed. The fee per delivery was lowered to 12,000 yen, which pregnant women do not pay.
