Latest Update on the Obstetric Medical Compensation System Supporting Safe Childbirth

1. What has changed?

From January 2022, the system updated the compensation criteria and the fee collected from birthing facilities. Babies born at 28 weeks or later are eligible under the new criteria, and special reviews based on low oxygen conditions were removed. The fee per delivery was lowered to 12,000 yen, which pregnant women do not pay.

2. Who does this affect?

The system covers babies born in Japan and their families, including foreign residents. It applies only if the medical facility where the baby is born is enrolled in the program. As of now, almost all birthing institutions in Japan participate.

3. When and what to be careful of?

The new rules apply to babies born from January 1, 2022. You can apply for compensation from the baby’s first birthday until their fifth birthday. Parents must submit a diagnosis by a specialized doctor and other required documents to the birthing facility. The facility will issue a registration certificate around the 22nd week of pregnancy, which must be kept safely.
