Changes to Residence Permit Fees from October 1, 2026

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan announced that from October 1, 2026, fees for changing residence status, extending residence period, and permanent residency will be revised. Payment methods will also change. Foreign residents in Japan should check the latest information.

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan has announced a revision of fees related to residence status changes, residence period extensions, and permanent residence permits starting October 1, 2026. These changes apply to applications submitted on or after that date.

Applications submitted by September 30, 2026 will still be charged the old fees, even if the approval is received after October 1.

There are provisions for fee reductions or exemptions for applicants with financial difficulties or special reasons as defined by law and regulations.

Payment methods will change for online applications. Instead of using revenue stamps, applicants can now pay at convenience stores or via bank transfer, including online banking. For applications done in person at offices, payment by revenue stamps is still required. Applicants should buy the correct amount of revenue stamps before their visit.
