October 19 — Japan’s History and Today
In 1873, five of Japan's earliest modern parks opened in Tokyo Prefecture: Asakusa Park, Ueno Park, Shiba Park, Fukagawa Park, and Asukayama Park. These parks were created by transforming temple grounds into public recreational spaces, laying the foundation for modern urban planning. They improved the quality of life by providing green spaces for relaxation and social gatherings.
On October 19, 1902, Tokyo Senmon Gakko officially renamed itself Waseda University and held its university opening ceremony. This change symbolized the growth of private higher education in Japan, contributing to greater diversity and expansion of academic opportunities. Today, Waseda University is recognized globally for its educational excellence.
