On September 22, 1887, Toji Ishii established Japan's first orphanage, and in 1944 Finland severed diplomatic ties with Japan. This day marks important milestones in social welfare and international relations.
In 1887, Toji Ishii founded Japan’s first orphanage called 'Kojikyoiku-kai' (later Okayama Orphanage) in Okayama City. The orphanage focused on the education and care of orphaned children and laid a foundation for Japan’s modern welfare system. For foreign residents in Japan, this reflects Japan’s long history of supporting vulnerable groups.
In 1944, during World War II, Finland broke off diplomatic relations with Japan. This event highlights the shifting international dynamics during the war. Knowing this history helps understand how post-war peace efforts have led to the friendly relations Japan and Finland enjoy today.
