Passport Applications Go Online

Starting March 2025, passport applications will be available online across Japan, with reduced fees from July 2026.
As of March 2025, all prefectures in Japan now allow online passport applications, offering more convenience to foreign residents. Applicants will only need to visit a government office once to collect their passport. Furthermore, from July 1, 2026, online application fees will be reduced. However, the process might take longer, so plan accordingly if you're traveling during this time. Be sure to check official sources for detailed information.
