September 23: International Sign Language Day — Blue Light Display at Niigata Prefectural Office

September 23 is recognized as International Sign Language Day by the United Nations and now officially marked as Sign Language Day in Japan. Niigata Prefecture will celebrate by lighting up its government building in blue, highlighting sign language as an important language and promoting awareness among residents including foreigners living in Japan.

Every year on September 23, the United Nations recognizes International Sign Language Day. Starting this year, Japan has officially established September 23 as “Sign Language Day” under new legislation. To mark the occasion, Niigata Prefecture will illuminate the 18th-floor observation corridor of its government building with blue lights from September 18 to 23. A similar lighting event will also take place at the Niigata Fureai Plaza. This event helps promote recognition of sign language as a language and raise awareness. Niigata Prefecture also runs programs such as parent-child sign language classes, sign language clubs, and training for sign interpreters. Sign language is a language carefully preserved and used by deaf people. Foreign residents in Japan are encouraged to take this opportunity to learn about sign language and promote mutual understanding.
