September 28 — Japan’s History and Today

September 27, 2026
September 28 marks the first International Metric Conference in 1889 and the Hakko Incident in 1918, events significant to standardized measurements and Japan’s modern history.

The 1889 1st International Metric Conference On September 28, 1889, the first International Metric Conference was held, defining the kilogram based on an alloy of platinum and iridium called the International Prototype Kilogram. This prototype kilogram is securely kept by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and has served as the international standard for mass measurement for many years. Standardized measurement units remain essential for science, technology, and international trade today. Residents in Japan should know that the units used are based on these international standards, making everyday transactions and measurements reliable.

The 1918 Hakko Incident On September 28, 1918, Ryūhei Murayama, president of the Osaka Asahi Shimbun newspaper, was attacked by members of a nationalist group known as the Black Dragon Society in what became known as the Hakko Incident. This event reflected the political and social tensions of the time and is considered an important episode in Japan’s modern history. It highlighted issues relating to press freedom and political conflict. For foreign residents, understanding such historical events can deepen insight into Japan’s political diversity and social context.
