Moving Into Housing in Japan

February 26, 2026
Once you have found a place to live in Japan, it is a good idea to understand the move-in procedures. This article explains the steps involved for each type of housing.

The move-in process differs depending on the type of housing.

- **Moving into public housing**: Applications are submitted at your local municipal office. You will need to prepare the required documents, and eligibility is checked based on criteria such as income and household composition.

- **Moving into UR rental housing**: Applications can be made at a UR office or through their website. No key money or agent fees are required, making the process relatively straightforward.

- **Moving into private rental housing**: Contracts are arranged through a real estate agency. In most cases, a security deposit, key money, and agent fees are required. You may also be asked to provide a guarantor.
