Resident Registry System for Foreign Residents
August 4, 2026
Foreign residents are now included in the resident registry system.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has announced the inclusion of foreign residents in the resident registry system. This change means that foreigners living in Japan will be registered just like Japanese nationals. The system is mainly targeted at mid- to long-term residents, including special permanent residents, allowing them to hold a residence record and streamline their administrative procedures. The system will be operational from March 27, 2024, and foreign residents can also apply for a My Number Card. For more details, please refer to the official website.
