Bear Sighting Alert Issued in Aomori Prefecture
Aomori Prefecture announced a bear sighting alert covering the whole area from April 20 to November 30, 2026. On August 22, a foreign tourist in Towada City’s Okuse area was bitten by a bear and injured.
This alert is important for foreign residents and visitors in Japan. When going to mountains or natural areas, please stay in groups, make noise using bells or radios to alert bears, and avoid approaching them. Do not run with your back turned to bears.
The alert period runs from April 20 to November 30, and it is better to avoid mountain areas during early morning and late evening when bears are active.
