Addition of Former Surname Phonetic Notation to Resident Record

August 18, 2026
From May 26, 2025, phonetic notation of former surnames can be added to your resident record.

Attention to foreign residents in Japan: Starting May 26, 2025, you can have the phonetic notation of your former surname added to your resident record. Both your former surname and its phonetic notation must be requested together. Foreign residents with an existing former surname notation will receive a notification from their municipality. If the phonetic notation is correct, it will be recorded without further action. If it's incorrect, you must request a correction. To know more about this procedure and required documents, please check with your local municipal office.
